What are voltage sensors?

Voltage sensors are used to detect and measure voltage. For example, they can be used to identify AC or DC voltage levels. This data can be communicated using a computer display system, meaning that any abnormal activity is flagged.

The input of voltage sensors is voltage and the output tends to be an output switch or signal (current, audible etc.). They're used by maintenance teams to help monitor and regulate their equipment, helping things to run efficiently. Their small size and high degree of accuracy means they can be very useful in these settings.

How do voltage sensors work?

Voltage sensors are wireless and use a no-contact measurement method. Like any sensor, they can detect and react to certain signals. Voltage sensors can be used to calculate and monitor the amount of voltage in a target object by determining AC and DC voltage levels.

Voltage sensors can work in different ways and the measurement is based on a voltage divider. You can get either a capacitive type voltage sensor and resistive type voltage sensor. Resistive type voltage sensors use a resister for the sensing element. Meanwhile, capacitive type voltage sensors use two conductor plates and non-conductive materials, also known as a dielectric. These voltage sensors use capacitive coupling. The smaller the capacitor, the larger the impedance, otherwise known as capacitive resistance.

What is a voltage transducer?

Transduction is the process of converting energy and voltage transducers do exactly that. AC and DC voltage transducers are used to monitor and communicate voltage levels in AC and DC systems. Their purpose is to convert physical quantities and energy into a readable electrical signal and they work alongside voltage sensors to achieve this.

While voltage sensors are relatively simple devices, voltage transducers are characterized by a more complicated electrical circuit to convert energy. The two terms are often interchangeable in industry despite these differences.

The voltage sensor detects a change in voltage and the transducer processes this using an electronic circuit to convert it into a signal that is readable. Voltage transducers provide a DC output directly proportional to the AC input voltage.

What are voltage sensors used for?

Voltage sensors are regularly used to control equipment. They're common in automotive, manufacturing, and medical industries, particularly where machinery is involved.

Providing 24/7 monitoring to detect any malfunctions, they have a high degree of accuracy and can also trigger alerts if the voltage data is a cause for concern. Any alerts can be sent to a centralized system. Something could be too high or too low, uncovering issues like overheating, for example. Voltage sensors can help to keep equipment functioning properly, allowing engineers and mechanics to intervene.

Voltage sensors can be useful for controlling machinery or equipment, on top of monitoring. They can control temperature using insulation or airflow regulation. Equipment can be automatically switched off if there is a threat of something becoming damaged. In cars, voltage sensors can be used for load sensing and can help to prevent damage to the motor by working alongside current sensors or thermal sensors to trigger warnings. They can also be used to manage the vehicle's idling speed, ensuring that this increases or decreases when needed.

What are the different types of voltage sensor?

On top of capacitive and resistive voltage divider differences, there are other ways to categorize voltage sensors:

AC voltage sensors

These voltage sensors are used when AC voltage needs to be measured. This might be for monitoring purposes like power failure detection or load sensing. When it comes to controlling functions, AC voltage sensors can action safety switching or motor overload.

DC voltage sensors

These voltage sensors are used when DC voltage needs to be measured. DC voltage sensors can be used for monitoring purposes like speed or fault detection, as well as control functions like temperature control.

High voltage sensors

Some voltage sensors are designed to detect the presence of high voltage, again, using non-contact means. High voltage and current sensors are often used to determine whether environments are safe to work in.

In many instances, the voltage values in a high-level voltage system can't be identified, which is where tools like capacitive voltage transformers can be used. They convert high-level voltages to a lower level.

What is the difference between voltage and current sensors?

Voltage sensors differ to current sensors. While voltage sensors are used to measure the voltage of an electrical circuit, current sensors are used to measure the flow of electrical currents in a circuit.
